Babaçu is an extremely productive, robust species of palm tree (10-30m high). It can be found in northeastern Brazil and gives rise to a small coconut. Babaçu oil is taken from this fruit, known for its great versatility, and used in cooking and in the cosmetic industry. The harvesting and breaking of coconuts is carried out by women who are part of traditionally extractive communities, known as “quebradeiras”. Armed with axes, they are responsible for extracting nuts for oil production while protecting and fighting for the green areas they occupy.
Babaçu is the raw material for Concepta Ingredients Babaçu Oil and also for Concepta Ingredients Babaçu Flour.
Harvested mainly by women from traditionally extractive communities, babaçu has become a source of income thanks to the market that involves the fruit's applications. Currently, Concepta Ingredients works together with several communities involved in the harvesting process and provides all the necessary support through the Bio Abundance Program, conserving the forest, respecting the population and promoting socioeconomic inclusion and reduction of social inequality.
Furthermore, the Free Babaçu Law, Law No. 7,888, recognizes the activities arising from the harvesting of babaçuu as cultural heritage in Piauí and prohibits the felling of the palm tree in order to increase its production.
